How it gets described on the phone
- Smoke rolling out into the room while the blower is plainly running
- Rattle or drone from the canopy that changes pitch with the speed setting

- Baffle filters pulled and checked for loading before anything is blamed on the blower

- Motor drawn at each speed, and the speed control checked where a single speed is dead
- Backdraft damper opened by hand and watched under the fan
- Canopy lighting, switching and the mounting itself, since a rattle is often neither motor nor duct
A hood that runs and still lets smoke into the room is a capture-and-duct problem far more often than a fan problem, and this is a city where the duct usually deserves the suspicion. Long horizontal runs, crushed flexible sections, dampers stiff with grease and shared shafts in older buildings all produce that symptom with a motor that tests perfectly.
